Guest Accounts for Tournament Play

In response to your feedback, we have introduced "guest accounts" to enhance the tournament experience. Tournament organizers can now generate guest accounts, allowing participants to join without creating a personal account or sharing their personal data with Melee. Key features of guest accounts include:

  • Instant Enrollment: Guest accounts are automatically enrolled in the tournament upon creation.
  • Temporary Access: These accounts are temporary and cannot be claimed or converted to permanent accounts.
  • Player Portal Links: Each guest account comes with a unique Player Portal link that does not require a login. These links are private and should be shared only with the designated player.
  • Match Access: Players can use their guest account username or Portal link to access their matches.
  • Information Security: Please provide players with a printout or email containing their guest account details to prevent any loss of information.

Improvements to Phase Creation for New Tournaments

Based on user feedback, we are enhancing the tournament creation process to be more intuitive and user-friendly for new organizers. While we continue to work on a comprehensive solution, we have made several key improvements to reduce confusion:

Playoffs vs. Single Elimination

At first glance, playoff phases and single elimination phases appear similar but serve distinct purposes:

  • Playoff Phases: Always occur at the end of a tournament and are designed to narrow down the field to a single winner. These phases match players based on their standings, pairing the highest-ranked with the lowest-ranked, the second highest with the second lowest, and so on.
  • Single Elimination Phases: Intended for mid-tournament use, these phases match players randomly.

Additionally, playoff phases interact differently with Swiss phases compared to single elimination phases. In the final round of a Swiss phase followed by a playoff phase, the Swiss phase is "power paired" from top to bottom of the standings. This reduces mismatched incentives among competitors before the top cut.

Given these distinctions, we have determined that the Single Elimination phase type is redundant when compared to the Playoff/Top Cut phase type and the Play Until X Losses phase type. Therefore, we have decided to disable the single elimination phase type.

We plan to reintroduce single elimination as "Bracketed Single Elimination" once we have developed additional tools to facilitate bracketed play. In the meantime, if randomized single elimination play is needed before the top cut, we recommend using the Play Until 1 Loss phase type.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve your tournament organizing experience.

  • All links to our documentation now directs users to our https://help.melee.gg help site.
  • Renamed "Playoff" phases to "Playoff/Top Cut" to reduce confusion about phase creation.

Tournament Audit Logs

Comprehensive Audit Logs Introduced:

We have implemented detailed and queryable audit logs for tournaments on the tournament controller. This feature provides scorekeepers with a comprehensive view of all activities within their tournaments.

Key Features of Audit Logs:

Log event types cover a wide range of activities including match result changes, phase transitions, player check-ins, standings calculations, and 60 other types of events, ensuring thorough tracking and accountability.

Feedback and Improvements:

While we aim for comprehensive coverage, there may be additional relevant event types that are not yet logged. We encourage scorekeepers and users to inform us if they notice any important events that should be logged but aren't currently included.

Important Note:

This new audit logging feature is intended to replace the live tournament stream on the tournament controller. This change is designed to provide a more structured and accessible way to monitor tournament progress and actions.

Minor Updates
  • Addressed an issue that led to decklists being removed from match and standings data tables.
  • Removed the tournament stream from the tournament controller.
  • Changed the user flow for deleting an user account.
  • Added the ability for users to download all of their data prior to deleting their user account.

New Two-Game Match Format for Disney Lorcana

Implementation of Match and Standings Models:

We have leveraged our newly updated match and standings models to support two-game matches for Disney Lorcana. These matches adhere to specialized match rules and utilize tiebreaker algorithms designed according to Ravensburger's specifications.

Match Compatibility:

Please note, two-game matches are distinct from other match types such as Best of Three and cannot be combined with them. This is due to incompatible standings tiebreakers. However, in playoff phases where only rankings are required—not standings—these matches are fully compatible.

Updated Match Result Submission:

We've updated the system to accommodate the submission of results specifically for two-game matches, streamlining the process and ensuring accuracy in standings and rankings.

Minor Updates
  • Updated the footer on various pages to better highlight our legal links and privacy policy.
  • Fixed an issue in the user profile results table to now display all tournaments, not just those with decklists.
  • Added a new debugging option in the matches cog menu on the tournament controller to view raw match details.
  • Introduced new columns to standings and match exports on the tournament controller for enhanced data analysis.
  • Resolved a bug that sometimes prevented automatic updating of tables on the tournament controller.
  • Addressed issues causing premature tournament endings or incorrect current round calculations.
  • Removed the "How To Play" link from the menu bar to streamline user navigation.
  • Updated all TCGPlayer affiliate links to utilize the new Impact system for improved tracking.
  • Enabled assigning a double loss directly from the matches table on the tournament controller.
